The Himalayan: Muslim women demand for their rights


KATHMANDU: The women of Muslim community have demanded their appropriate representative in country’s economic, social, educational, cultural and political spheres concluding that lack of proper representation in the bodies concerned was an obstacle to their development.

Speaking at a news conference organised in the capital on Saturday, chairwoman of Nepal Muslim Women Welfare Society Seema Khan said that most of Muslim women were back academically and socially as well.

She said the Muslim women were doubly marginalised due to the tradition of Muslim community and the state’s policy.

During the programme, they have demanded that the state establish a women university, guarantee women’s proportional representation, provision of women madrasa and free education to Muslim women, among others.
