International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: November 25

The UN General Assembly named November 25, in 1999, as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Unfortunately a day has to be assigned to raise awareness that women, around the world, fall victim to domestic abuse, rape and other forms of violence. It has become a huge problem in society and affects every class, race and ethnic background.

I learnt today, that this day was chosen because in 1960, three sisters, who were political activists in the Dominican Republic, were assassinated by the dictator Rafael Trujillo. It wasn’t until 1981 that women’s activists marked the day to fight violence against women.

November 25 also marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism that leads up to Human Rights Day on December 10. Since yesterday, I have been reading blogs and campaigns organized by women shelters that are participating in the 16 Days of Activism…and I am now inspired to contribute to this cause!

I  vow to post an act of abuse, that is meted out on women for no other reason besides being a woman, every day until December 10. They may not always be pleasant examples and they may not be always be a physical act of aggression but the reason for doing this to create awareness on what constitutes abuse.

I missed day 1, which was yesterday, but I will enter today’s and yesterday’s entry in one post and then continue with an example until December 10. (I hope I follow through!)

‘Happy’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women!
