Newstalk ZB: Call for town to unite in women’s rights protest

A Nelson woman is calling for her town to join an international call for women’s rights. She’s seeking change after a 62-year-old local woman was hospitalised on New Years Day after being raped and assaulted in the middle of the afternoon in Victory Gardens. Her 22-year-old attacker has appeared in court and remains in custody. The attack’s led to Sharyn Black of the Civics Education Action Group to organise a protest. “Women internationally are speaking out, so Nelson, I think, has to join the international call for women’s rights again.” Sharyn Black asks that people write their protest statement on cards, then meet in silent vigil at the Victory Community Centre at 11.30 on Thursday. |
