CJAD 800 am: Ending violence against women

Posted By: Laura Casella · 4/13/2013 11:00:00 AM

The Canadian Women’s Foundation is kicking off its month-long campaign today to raise awareness to the prevalent issue of violence against women in the country.

A fundraising initiative called the Move for Hope took place at 11 am in cities across Canada, including at the Montreal Forum. Funds raised will go to local shelters for women and children and violence prevention programs.

The numbers in regards to violence agaisnt women in Canada are staggering. On average, every six days in Canada, a woman is killed by her husband or partner. Moreover, women are 11 times more likely than men to be victims of sexual assualt and half of Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence before the age of 16.

Kathryn Babcock speaks for the Canadian Women’s Foundation. She says often women do not tell anyone that they are being abused.

“Many women are in relationships where they are told that it is their fault and they feel a lot of shame,” she explains.

Babcock says if you know or think you know someone in a violent relationship to let her know that she isn’t alone, tell her it is not her fault, then try to get that person to seek professional help.

In Montreal that would be the SOS Violence Congugale line. The phone number is 514-873-9010.
